Cookie Policy

Last updated 20 August 2026

Fiscalance keeps cookies to a minimum. This page lists everything the app stores in your browser and why.

Essential session cookie

When you sign in, our authentication provider (better-auth) sets a session cookie so you stay signed in as you navigate the app. This cookie is strictly necessary for the service to work and cannot be disabled while remaining signed in; it is not used for advertising or cross-site tracking.

Functional local storage

We use your browser’s local storage (not a cookie, but similar in purpose) to remember things like your theme (light/dark), your language, the figures you enter in the optimizer if you are not signed in, and whether you have dismissed this cookie notice. This data stays on your device and is only sent to our server if you explicitly save it to your account.

Analytics

If enabled, Fiscalance uses a self-hosted, privacy-friendly analytics tool (Umami) that does not use cookies and does not track you across sites — it only counts aggregate page views and anonymous interaction events (such as starting the optimizer, reaching the end of an article, or which step of the optimizer someone stopped at) to help us understand what is useful. These events never include anything you type: the optimizer and the calculators report which step or which field was used, never the figures you entered. We do not sell this data or share it with third-party advertisers. This is off by default and only active when we have configured an analytics website id for the deployment.

The same counting applies to our embeddable calculators when another website places one. The widget is a page of ours shown inside a frame, so it is counted the same cookieless way, and the address of the page that embedded it is recorded so we can see where our calculators are used. Nothing is stored in that website’s browser storage, and no identifier follows you from it to anywhere else.

Product analytics (optional, and off unless you allow it)

If you choose “Allow” on the notice at the bottom of the page, we additionally record the figures you enter into the optimizer and the calculators — day rate, billable days, expenses, salary, planned dividend and the other inputs — together with which step you reached. This is stored on our own server, not with a third party, and we use it only to see which tools help and where people get stuck.

It is tied to a random identifier stored in your browser, not to your name. If you are signed in, it is linked to your account so we can answer support questions about your own figures. It is deleted automatically after 90 days, and immediately if you delete your account.

Embedded calculators are different: when one of our calculators is embedded on another website, it reports the figures typed into it anonymously, without setting anything on your device — so there is nothing there for the “Allow” / “Only essential” choice above to govern, and that choice does not apply to it. See our Privacy Policy for exactly what is sent.

You can change your mind at any time: choose “Only essential” if the notice is still showing, or use “Stop recording my inputs” on your Account page, which also erases what we have already recorded. Choosing not to allow it changes nothing about the tools — every feature works exactly the same either way.

No advertising cookies

Fiscalance does not use advertising cookies, retargeting pixels, or third-party trackers for marketing purposes. We do not sell your data.

Managing cookies

We set only an essential session cookie, so there is no advertising-cookie panel to configure. The notice at the bottom of the page does carry one real choice: “Allow” or “Only essential”, which decides whether we record the figures you enter (see “Product analytics” above). Your answer is remembered in your browser and can be changed from your Account page. You can also clear cookies and local storage at any time from your browser settings; doing so will sign you out, reset your unsaved preferences, and mean we ask about analytics again.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy if what we store changes. The “last updated” date at the top of this page reflects the latest revision.
